To decrease the number of cycling accidents among older cyclists in The Netherlands, TNO and RRD developed an ‘intelligent bicycle’. Many older cyclists struggle with timely identifying narrow objects on the cycling path (e.g. a pole), and looking over their shoulder before turning or stopping. The intelligent bicycle provides tactile feedback in the bicycle’s handles to warn the cyclist for oncoming obstacles, while vibrations in the seat warn for overtaking traffic.
During my master internship at RRD, I evaluated the effectiveness and user experience of this intelligent bicycle. This included designing, conducting and analysing the first user tests and interviews.
